This is a wonderful tribute to Issa whom we love - isn't it? Therefore I like it very much.
Here four haiku of Issa:
my old age--
even facing a scarecrow
ashamed
nowhere, nowhere
can a young scarecrow
be found
evening falls--
me and a scarecrow
just us two
looking younger than me
the scarecrow casts
his shadow
Best wishes
Rudi
Rudi; yes, those Issa´s very human haiku are excellent ones! Also something very democratic?
I translated some 30 scarecrow-haiku from Blyth's Haiku anthology and published those in my collection Dolby C (1987).
My fafourite was, or is:
Even before His Majesty,
The scarecrow does not remove
His plaited hat
By Dansui. I translated "His Majesty" in Finnish as "President" ,-)
Here is one version (original; who knows?)
O scarecrow -
you know where autumn wind
coming from?
"does he also" would be more idiomatic.
Good one.
OK Bill, thanks.
